Block Captains needed

See Block Captains for volunteer openings. Please contact the Acting Neighborhood Watch Coordinator, Hermitt Mosley (Acting) at 301-422-9306, if you are interested in serving your community as a Block Captain. We need volunteers for several openings throughout the neighborhood.

When to contact your Block Captain

  • To report a crime after first reporting it to the police. The block captain will spread the word around quickly in an effort to help us be alert to problems that may affect us.
  • When you have a concern that should be brought up at the monthly meeting or handled through the association.
  • If you haven't received your meeting notice by the third week of the month.

Give Your Home an Occupied Look

Most burglars are looking for unoccupied homes. If your home appears occupied, the burglar will usually look for other more inviting sites. This is the single most important tip for protecting your home during long absences.

  1. Temporarily stop delivery of the mail and newspapers, or arrange for a neighbor to pick them up for you. Papers piling up in front of a house or mail stuffed in a box is an indication that no one is home.
  2. Have your lawn mowed and watered in your absence.
  3. Always leave a few inner lights burning at night Use timers for lights and have them come on in the evening hours. Include TV and radios among the items on timers. If you can, set timers for varying times on different days.
  4. Leave trip plans and an emergency phone number with trusted neighbors and friends. Make sure someone is checking the house while you are gone.
  5. Move valuables and small appliances so they can't be seen from a window.
  6. Put valuables such as jewelry, large sums of cash, documents in a safe deposit box.
  7. Never leave your house key hidden outside under a doormat, in a flower pot or on the ledge of a door.
  8. Don't forget to call the local Police Department or your local agency to have your home placed on a house check or vacation watch. An officer will periodically stop by your home to check on it. Provide the agency with contact points locally and where you will be, in case you have to be reached.
