fall leaves Association Meeting

Wednesday, 19 September 2001, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. There will be a meeting of the Cool Spring Terrace Civic Association at the First Church of Christ, Scientist on Adelphi Road. Doors will be opened at 6:45 p.m. for the meeting, which will be held in the Sunday School room.

Future meetings are planned for the third Wednesday of each month in the First Church of Christ, Scientist. Do not park in the little side lot. The church has asked us to park around back and enter through the back door. This is to accommodate the congregants who will be coming to their church service on Wednesday evenings. If the chain is up, unhook it and enter the meeting room by the door near the back lot. The back lot is lit. end

public meeting Summary of the Previous Meeting

Our last meeting on August 15, 2001 had some increased attendance. Mrs. Ruth Affens took the minutes. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. Someone mentioned that the new warning sign on Cool Spring Road was at the wrong location (after the "ess" rather than before it.) Construction on the new school appears to have begun. A street light is reported out on Osage Street. It was suggested tot call Mr. Shapiro on the County Council (301-952-3700) about this, since he invited such calls when he came to our association meeting. It was suggested that if someone suspects that a group home is not being run properly on should call the department of licenses or property standards so that the county authorities who regulate such homes can come and provide a proper informed inspection. Certainly it is to the benefit of all—especially to the residents of the group homes—to hold them to the highest standards of operation. At a minimum it would seem that there should be careful and professional supervision at the homes at all times.

Some residents mentioned that they think that there are illegal businesses that do not belong on residential property being conducted in the area. They even mentioned that an appropriate county regulatory agency agreed that the business activity should cease; but it has not taken action to shut down the business.

Some residents registered their irritation with neighbors who walk their dogs without evidence of collecting the droppings from the animals. The county has a pooper-scooper ordinance so that persons with dogs should clean up the messes made by the dogs and not leave it for their neighbors or their neighbor's children to have to clean up the mess from their lawns—or their shoes (ugh!). Dogs are loveable; and their presence in the community is a benefit to all for the security and comfort they afford. But they are also a burden.

It was mentioned that a commercial school bus was being parked in the community. It was suggested that if a resident noticed commercial vehicles illegally parked on the street in this noncommercially zoned area, they call the police to have the offending vehicles ticketed. It was suggested to call Officer DeBurros, our community police officer.

The county district lines are to be redrawn soon. Persons interested in this question can call Mr. Gutzmacher (301-952-3207) at the county council to discuss this issue. There will be redistricting on the state level. Persons can contact the legislature in Annapolis to have an input to that process.

It was suggested that more neighbors be encouraged to attend our meetings. Mrs. Katherine Chambers (301-422-1991) volunteered to head a phone tree to call neighbors to remind them to attend the meetings.

It was mentioned that Mr. Thomas Shortino passed away recently. His contributions to the community were mentioned and his life appreciated.

It was mentioned that apparently some senior citizens were not taking care of their property. Mrs. Chambers mentioned that Meals on Wheels are available through the United Methodist Church.

Elections: We should hold elections for officers of the association in sometime in the next few months. The current officers: President Francis J. Kelly, Vice President William Coleman, Treasurer Rod Walker, Secretary Mrs. Helen McKeever were nominated for re-election. Other nominees will be solicited in future meetings. end
